The Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA), in partnership with the FAWE Regional Secretariat (FAWE RS), conducted a monitoring mission in Ndola to assess the implementation of STEM education and the inclusivity of learning environments for all learners, including persons with disabilities, at the Northern Technical College (NORTEC).

The mission began with a courtesy call at the Provincial Education Officer’s (PEO) office, where the team was warmly received by the Provincial Education Standards Officer (PESO), Mr. Sefulo Nyambe who commended FAWEZA and its partners for promoting access to quality, gender-responsive education in the Copperbelt Province.

The delegation, led by FAWE RS Senior Programmes Officer, Ms. Emily Gumba, also visited the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) provincial office, where they held discussions with the Provincial Representative, Mr. Anthony Mwansa, who also serves on the Provincial Selection Committee on the Mastercard Foundation Bursary Support Programme. The dialogue focused on the challenges persons with disabilities face in accessing STEM education at tertiary level. Mr. Mwansa emphasized the importance of starting sensitization and preparation for inclusivity from primary and secondary education, while also calling for improved infrastructure, mobility aids, and learning resources.

At NORTEC, the team was welcomed by the Head of Institution, Mr. Martin Kasonso. An interactive session was held with the Mastercard Foundation Bursary Support Programme Selection Committee, NORTEC staff, and participants. Discussions reflected progress made and institutional readiness for future phases of the programme, while also acknowledging ongoing challenges, including accommodation and academic support needs.

Ms. Gumba further engaged directly with the participants, listening to their experiences, progress, and welfare concerns. To support their learning journey, participants received educational materials and personal essentials including books, calculators, blankets, extension cables, solar lamps, and power banks.

The students expressed heartfelt appreciation for the continued support and shared inspiring stories of how the programme is transforming their academic journeys and personal lives.
