From Doubt to Purpose: Chaolembi’s Journey in Midwifery, STEM, and Finding Her Voice

My name is Chaolembi Wana, and I am a second-year student at the Mansa College of Nursing and Midwifery in Mansa District, Luapula Province, Zambia. I am studying Registered Midwifery, a field deeply rooted in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) because it combines medical science, clinical technology, and critical thinking to save the lives of mothers and babies.

I am the first born in a family of four, raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to support my education. Growing up, I always knew education was important, but as I advanced in my studies, financial challenges began to weigh heavily on my journey. There were moments when I doubted whether I would complete my training because of school fees and the pressure it placed on my family.

Everything began to change when my class tutor informed us about the Mastercard Foundation Second Chance Pathways Programme in partnership with FAWEZA. At first, I did not believe that an opportunity like that could be for someone like me. But I applied, and when I was selected for the bursary, it felt like a door I thought had closed forever had suddenly opened again.

Before receiving this support, I struggled not only financially but also emotionally. I often questioned myself and lacked confidence. Sometimes I missed classes because I felt discouraged, and I could not fully see myself completing my studies. The fear of failure and the burden of fees affected my focus and participation.

Being selected into the programme changed everything for me. It gave me hope, stability, and most importantly, the confidence to continue pursuing my dream of becoming a midwife. I now attend classes regularly and participate actively in both lectures and clinical practice. Knowing that my education is supported has allowed me to focus fully on learning without the constant worry of fees.

My journey into midwifery is driven by a deep desire to make a difference in maternal and child health. I have witnessed the challenges faced by women in my community, including high maternal and infant mortality rates. This motivated me to choose this path so that I can one day contribute to saving lives and improving healthcare outcomes for mothers and newborns.

Through my training, I have gained hands-on experience in clinical skills that form the foundation of STEM in healthcare. I have learned how to cannulate patients, administer injections, monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse, examine pregnant women, and carry out antenatal bookings. These are not just classroom lessons; they are practical, life-saving skills that require precision, knowledge, and responsibility.

Beyond my clinical training, I have also benefited greatly from FAWEZA mentorship and the TUSEME Club, which has played a significant role in my personal growth. Through TUSEME, I have learned how to speak up, express myself confidently, and share my thoughts without fear. Before joining the club, I was often quiet and hesitant to speak, especially in academic and social settings. I lacked confidence and sometimes felt invisible.

The TUSEME Club created a safe space where I learned that my voice matters. I became more confident in expressing my opinions, participating in discussions, and engaging with others. It also helped me understand issues such as gender-based violence, self-awareness, and leadership. I now find it easier to communicate effectively and even help resolve misunderstandings among my peers. This has strengthened my relationships with classmates and improved my ability to work as part of a team.

FAWEZA mentorship has also equipped me with life skills such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and stress management. I have learned how to save, plan, and make responsible decisions. These skills have helped me manage academic pressure, especially during examination periods, which used to overwhelm me in the past.

Since joining the bursary programme, my academic life has improved significantly. I am more focused, more confident, and more engaged in my studies. I actively participate in ward activities and clinical practice, and I now feel a strong sense of belonging in my learning environment. My performance has improved because I am no longer distracted by financial worries.

The impact of this opportunity extends beyond me. It has reduced the financial burden on my mother, who has struggled to support my education as a single parent. It has also brought hope to my siblings, as I now carry the possibility of becoming a role model they can look up to. I hope that one day, I will be able to support their education as well.

Looking ahead, I see a clear future for myself. I no longer doubt whether I will complete my studies. Instead, I envision myself progressing from a registered midwife to specializing in obstetric medicine and eventually advancing to higher levels of medical training. This programme has helped me believe in a future that once felt impossible.

I am deeply grateful to the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with FAWEZA for giving me this opportunity. The bursary has not only supported my education but has also transformed my confidence, voice, and purpose. Through STEM, I am learning skills that will allow me to save lives, support families, and contribute to my community.
